What is spaced repetition?

Spaced repetition combines two of the most reliable findings in learning science: active recall (testing yourself instead of rereading) and the spacing effect (spreading practice over time). You store each idea as a question-and-answer card, try to recall the answer from memory, and then let an algorithm schedule when you'll see that card again — sooner if you struggled, much later if it was easy.

The forgetting curve: why you lose what you learn

In 1885, German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus ran memory experiments on himself and mapped what he called the forgetting curve — the rate at which new information decays. His finding was stark: without any review, we forget roughly half of new material within an hour and up to about 70% within 24 hours. Memory doesn't fade at a steady drip; it falls off a cliff early and then levels out.

Here's the useful part Ebbinghaus also noticed: every time you successfully recall something, the curve resets and flattens. The forgetting gets slower after each review. Space those reviews correctly and the interval between them can grow from one day to a week to a month to a year — while the memory only gets more stable.

Why spaced practice beats cramming

The spacing effect — that spread-out study beats massed study — is one of the most replicated results in cognitive psychology. A 2006 meta-analysis by Cepeda, Pashler, and colleagues in Psychological Bulletin reviewed 254 studies covering more than 14,000 participants and found that spaced practice produced substantially better long-term retention than cramming the same material in one sitting.

How to use spaced repetition in 5 minutes a day

You don't need to understand the math to benefit from it. A modern spaced-repetition system (the classic one is the SM-2 algorithm behind SuperMemo, first published by Piotr Woźniak in 1987) handles the scheduling. Your job is just three steps:

  1. Turn what you learn into cards. One clear question, one clear answer. A lecture, an article, or a meeting can become a handful of cards in minutes.
  2. Review only what's due today. A good system shows you the cards about to fade — usually a five-minute stack — not your entire deck.
  3. Rate how it felt. Mark each card easy or hard. The algorithm uses that to schedule the next review: soon if you struggled, far out if it was easy.
